BASSETERRE, St Kitts – Prime minister Dr Timothy Harris has revoked an invitation to the Electoral Observation Mission of the Organization of American States (OAS/EOM) to St Kitts and Nevis for the June 5, 2020, general elections.
In a letter to the political leader of St Kitts and Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP) Dr Denzil Douglas, dated May 28, OAS secretary-general, Luis Almagro validated that the Organization had accepted Dr Harris’ invitation of May 19, but the invitation was revoked on May 27.
“Unfortunately, on May 27 the government informed the OAS that, following the establishment of a 14-day quarantine, it would not be feasible for the observer mission to travel to St. Kitts and Nevis.
“OAS/GS regrets that a practical solution was not put in place like was the case in Suriname to allow our observers to deploy but is respectful of the sovereign decision,” the OAS letter read.
On May 22, NextGen SKN – SKNLP called for international observers ahead of general elections.
SKNLP deputy political leader Marcella Liburd cautioned that prime minister Dr Harris was “hell-bent on securing a victory at any cost and by whatever means possible” advised that one safeguard is the intervention of international observers representing key organisations including the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) CARICOM and the Organization of Associates (OAS), adding, “this is the only way we can be sure that the general election is free and fair as well as free from fear.”
In a statement Friday, Dr Douglas said: “I am very, very concerned that something sinister is being planned. The electorate, citizens and residents, civil society, CARICOM and friendly countries of the Federation of St Kitts and Nevis must be informed of this latest development in the saga of the outgoing Dr Harris administration’s attempts to hold on to power in the face of a sure defeat at the polls on June 5.”

“This is further vindication of our court action to bring an end to the unconstitutional state of emergency as evidence mounts that it is being used by Dr Harris for an ‘evil purpose’ and to give the administration an unfair advantage in the upcoming elections,” Dr Douglas added.

Basically, members of OAS Spanish Speaking nations are ill-equipped to assure democracy and fairness in any nation with a significant black population. If they cannot do that for the millions of African descendants in the countries they came from, how on earth can the do that elsewhere? I mean, how can anyone keep your house clean when theirs is dirty and they are content to live in it like that.
